South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a sovereign state located on the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name “Korea” is derived from the Goryeo Kingdom, a medieval dynasty. South Korea is located in the northern hemisphere and is mostly mountainous. South Korea has a total area of 99,392 square kilometers and a population of over 51 million. Its capital and largest city is Seoul, with a population of 10,117,909. The currency of South Korea is the South Korean won. Archaeological findings indicate that the Korean Peninsula was occupied during the Lower Paleolithic period. Korean history begins with the founding of Gojoseon in 2333 BC by the legendary Dangun Wanggeum. The unification of the Three Korean Kingdoms under the Silla Kingdom in 668 AD followed, with Korea ruled by Goryeo and Joseon as a single nation until the end of the Korean Empire in 1910, when it was annexed by Japan.

Changdeokgung also known as Changdeokgung Palace or Changdeok Palace, is set within a large park in Jongno District, Seoul, South Korea. It is one of the “Five Grand Palaces” built by the kings of the Joseon dynasty (1392–1897)
Changdeokgung was the most favored palace of many Joseon kings and retained many elements dating from the Three Kingdoms of Korea period that were not incorporated in the more contemporary Gyeongbokgung. One such element is the fact that the buildings of Changdeokgung blend with the natural topography of the site instead of imposing themselves upon it. Like the other Five Grand Palaces in Seoul
